Mascara – check what you probably didn’t know about it!

You can use it every day. Mascara. Are you sure you know everything about it? In fact, not many women are aware of how it was invented. It’s high time to make up for it and get to know better the cosmetic that we can hardly live without.

MASCARA IN THE PAST

Women have always been in the pursuit of beauty. Already in antiquity women dyed their eyelashes with the prototypes of today’s mascaras – made of oil, protein and soot. Later, the Greek women followed their Egyptian sisters and started emphasizing their lashes.

The first mascara in the form that we know today was made by Eugene Rimmel. In the second half of the 19th century, he created the first mascara based on powdered coal and water, and even equipped it with a special brush. The idea turned out to be such a success that for a long time all mascaras were referred to as ‘rimmel’ all over the world.

Another revolution was a formula made for Rimmel by Williams, who was a chemist. After over 50 years he felt the need to upgrade the formula by mixing coal dust and petroleum jelly. His mascara has become a hit over the world and resulted in the launch of Maybelline company.

MASCARA TODAY

Today, both Rimmel and Maybelline are one of the leading companies producing mascaras. However, since then they have launched many different formulas. We can choose different types of mascaras – lengthening, thickening, curling, waterproof, hypoallergenic, etc.

Which mascara to choose? It depends on what type of eyelashes we have (short, long, sparse, dense), and what effects we expect (natural, theatrical, expressive). It’s good to know that the result depends on two things – the formula and the brush. Check those two aspects before making the final decision.

Modern mascaras do not contain soot, tar, etc. They are based on safe and tested synthetic substances. A mascara of a good quality contains natural ingredients, such as resin (eg. rosin), beeswax and mineral pigments. Unfortunately, cheaper mascaras often contain harmful ingredients: parabens, alcohols, mercury, nickel and various types of preservatives. It’s good to avoid them.

The brush matters as well. Most of the brushes are made of nylon or silicone. However, the shape and size of the wand is equally important – it’s easy to check the properties of mascara just by looking at the brush. If it is large and dense, it will add some volume. If it is thin and has the shape of a comb, it will comb and lengthen the eyelashes.

These are some of the secrets of mascaras. If you want to know more, browse the Internet – there are plenty of interesting facts about mascara.
